As can be seen, arginine possesses numerous pharmacologic actions that have great potential benefit in clinical practice. Although the animal experimental data are compelling, there is a need for continued clinical study in order to better define the role of arginine in the care of patients. Previous studies have been limited to small volunteer groups, and no study exists on the dosage and its efficacy of arginine in humans during periods of stress. Though arginine is considered relatively safe at high dosages, there is no study on the minimum effective dose in human clinical practice. Recently, it was shown that impaired healing of diabetic wounds can be partially corrected by arginine supplementation, and this effect is accompanied by enhanced wound nitric oxide synthesis. Further studies of this finding need to be done in clinical practice. Finally, the exact mechanism of arginine and wound healing needs to be further elucidated, especially the role of nitric oxide in healing.29
