Despite many years of study and a substantial knowledge base of the specific processes and factors involved, wound healing phenomenon remains puzzling. There is still much to learn about the wound-specific nutritional interventions that are available to improve wound healing.

Nutrition, foundationally and profoundly, adds to this confounding clinical enigma. Nutritional depletion may exert inhibitory effects, while sound nutritional supplementation, macronutrients, and micronutrients can contribute to positive wound amelioration. Within this paradigm, the clinician should be able to recognize patients who may be expected to have wound healing difficulties and offer early nutritional intervention, respecting micronutrient nutriture, and especially trace elements, to avoid wound failure.

Future research will further define the role of trace elements in all macronutrient (protein, carbohydrate, and lipid) and micronutrient (electrolyte and vitamin) in vivo reactions as they relate to wound care.
