numbness in the toes. When pantothenic acid antagonists are provided along with a pantothenic acid deficient diet, headaches, fatigue, and insomnia have been noted.

The Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine did not establish a tolerable upper level of intake (UL) for pantothenic acid, because it is well tolerated in large amounts and has no known toxic effects in humans.8 Very high intakes of calcium D-pantothenate have been shown to result in diarrhea.27

Because inadequate data are available to set an RDA for pantothenic acid, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine has set an AI of 5 mg/d for male and female adolescents as well as adults.8 Sources of this vitamin include liver, egg yolk, yogurt, avocados, milk, sweet potatoes, broccoli, and cooked chicken.
