3. Severe (< 500/mm3). Only severe neutropenia is associated with a significant risk of infection.

B. Does child appear ill or febrile? Neutropenic patients can present quite suddenly with serious infections, despite a negative history. Some of these patients need to be diagnosed and treated immediately with antibiotics. Immunocompromised children with infections can be seriously ill, even without fever.

C. Are there signs or symptoms of pneumonia? Pneumonia is a common infection in patients with neutropenia.

D. Is there need for immediate treatment? In some cases, hospitalization and treatment with IV antibiotics are needed immediately.
