i. Hemolytic uremic syndrome. Patients typically have thrombocytopenia, hemolytic anemia, and renal failure. These symptoms typically occur following diarrheal illness secondary to E coli Ol57:H7.

ii. Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). More likely to produce neurologic symptoms than is hemolytic uremic syndrome.

iii. Post-bone marrow transplantation.

iv. Drug induced.

c. Congenital heart disease.

d. Direct antiplatelet effects of drugs (protamine; ristocetin).

e. Platelet contact with foreign material.

f. Type 2B or platelet-type von Willebrand disease.
