Laboratory Data

1. CBC. To help rule out conditions such as sepsis, and determine hemoglobin concentration and oxygen-carrying capacity of blood.

2. Basic metabolic panel. Provides clues to volume status, hypoglycemia, and electrolyte disturbances. BUN is another clue in determination of volume status. Renal function can be estimated by creatinine value. Hypoglycemia and electrolyte imbalances, if present, should be corrected.

3. Urinalysis. Rule out rhabdomyolysis and myoglobinuria resulting from excessive shivering and cell breakdown.

4. ABGs. Provide acid-base, ventilation, and oxygenation status.
