Laboratory Data

1. CBC with platelets. Check for anemia as well as evidence of inflammation or infection.

2. PT and PTT. Evaluates clotting ability.

3. Type and crossmatch. For significant bleeding.

4. Amylase and lipase. Screen for pancreatitis.

5. Blood cultures. For fever, tachycardia.

6. Serum electrolytes. Carefully monitor patient's hydration, as well as potassium and bicarbonate levels, during continuous suction.

7. NG aspirate. A pH > 6 indicates use of antacids or H2 blockers or that tip of the tube is distal to the pylorus.
