In contrast to Viscum album var. coloratum and others, Viscum album L. obviously do not contain typical alkaloids. Reports on "alkaloid-like" compounds in Viscum album, including tyramine, phenylethylamine, choline and acetylcholine, have been summarised by Hegenauer (1966).
Khwaja et al. (1986) described alkaloids from Viscum album var. coloratum and Viscum album L. These "alkaloids" were defined only by the extraction procedure and their reaction with the not yet specific Dragendorff-alkaloid reagent. Due to their extreme lability, the substances remain uncharacterised until now.
