Over 1000 LAT procedures have been performed in the author's practice. LAT size has been correlated to patency time. LATs less than 1.0 mm in diameter heal within 2 weeks, LATs that are 1.5 mm heal within 3 weeks, and LATs that are 2.0 mm heal within 4 weeks. LAT successfully resolves persistent SOM in 80% of adult cases without the need for PE tube placement.10 Children of all ages tolerate the procedure well, and placement of PE tubes is avoided in almost half (46%) of these patients.

When there is an obvious history of trauma or surgical manipulation, office endoscopy is used to evaluate the round and oval windows for perilymph fistula.
