Pulmonary Procedures

Lung or mediastinal procedures are sometimes required to manage infectious or neoplastic disease after transplantation. Again, we favor aggressive pursuit of definitive diagnosis when an abnormality is identified on x-ray or when apparently routine infections fail to resolve after appropriate initial treatment. Bronchoscopy, open lung biopsy, and less commonly formal pulmonary resection can usually be accomplished without disruption of oral immunosuppression. Antibiotic coverage should include oropharyngeal flora, plus common pulmonary pathogens.
