Bronchial Anastomotic Complications

Airway complications were formerly a major cause of morbidity and mortal-ity.44 Failure of the bronchial anastomosis is generally an ischemic problem. Using standard implantation techniques, the donor bronchus is rendered ischemic and relies on collateral pulmonary flow during the first few days following transplantation. Keeping the length of donor bronchus short—two rings proximal to the upper lobe takeoff—reduces the length of donor bronchus at risk for ischemia.
