Molecular Mechanisms Of Drosophila And C Elegans Nmj Development

Synapse formation involves a complex host of adhesion, signaling, and structural molecules. A developing neurite must grow toward its target (axon guidance), recognize its target, and stabilize the connection (target recognition and stabilization). Synapse-specific molecules must then be recruited and organized to create functional pre- and postsynaptic sites (assembly). Below, we discuss the Drosophila and C. elegans contributions to the molecular understanding of target recognition, target stabilization, and synapse assembly. Table 1 lists the major molecules involved in these processes.
