These graphs are representative of other regions of association cortex. Both laminae III and V show the same relationship. As the number of synapses declines, the size of the residual synapses increases. This may represent a compensatory mechanism used by the disease stricken cortex to maintain total synaptic contact area. The lines represent a simple regression analysis.
