Rabies

Rabies is still associated with 100% mortality. It is transmitted by bites or scratches from a variety of mammals, including bats.12 The incubation period ranges from a few days to several months and then, after a prodromal phase of fever, anxiety, and disturbed sensation at the site of the wound, CNS signs develop. Encephalitic or paralytic signs may predominate but the patient inexorably progresses to coma and cardiorespiratory failure. Other than supportive care, there is no therapy for human rabies.
