The physiological changes in status epilepticus are often divided into two phases, the transition from phase 1 to 2 occurring after about 30-60 minutes of continuous seizures.1,13-15 Although this is a generally useful concept, it must be recognised that there is great variation. Both the rate and extent of physiological change are dependent on many other factors, including the anatomical site of the epileptic focus, the severity of the seizures, the underlying aetiology, and the treatment employed. Nevertheless, this staging of changes is helpful in devising a rational plan for therapy.
