Nipah virus

Nipah virus caused an outbreak of severe encephalitis in Singapore and Malaysia in 1998-99.36 The virus is a previously unrecognised paramyxovirus that chiefly infected pig farmers and those in related industries. Pigs provide a reservoir of infection and the virus is spread to man by the aerosol route. It causes a CNS vasculitis with endothelial cell infection, vascular thrombosis, and tissue infarction. Ribavirin may reduce the mortality. Aggressive culling of pigs has effectively terminated the outbreak.
