Xenon-enhanced computed tomography (Xe-CT) measurements of CBF have been in clinical use for over a decade and, more recently, have become easier and safer to use . The technique is based on the radiodensity of xenon and its ability to freely cross the blood-brain barrier. CT scanning of the brain is performed before and during a short period of inhalation of 33% xenon gas. CBF is then calculated based on the relative density of areas of interest on the CT scan. The technique has been shown to have an accuracy of greater than 90%.
