AVM embolization can be performed under local or general anesthesia. This is dependent upon the co-operation of the patient and preference of the neuroradiologist. With over-the-wire catheters, agents with a short half-life, such as propofol, are administered. These stronger agents are given under the supervision of an anesthesiologist, with standard monitoring of pulse, blood pressure and pulse oximetry.
