This entity is defined as clinical evidence of spinal cord dysfunction as a consequence of a traumatic injury, without radiographic evidence of fractures, dislocations or ligamentous injuries.

This type of clinical presentation is seen in adults and children, both of which have different clinical presentations as well as prognoses. In adults, the most likely injury mechanism is hyperextension superimposed on cervical spondylosis, which usually presents clinically with an acute central cord syndrome.
