Each of the different cerebral arteriovenous malformations has distinct radiographic features. They may be diagnosed non-invasively using CT, MRI or MRA. However, cerebral angiography is necessary for treatment planning when an AVM is diagnosed. Trans-femoral catheter angiography is a safe procedure. The risk of stroke, arterial dissection, lower-extremity ischemia or renal dysfunction is less than 1%. The risk, however, is increased two or threefold for patients with atherosclerotic disease. Other studies, such as fMRI, magneto-encephalography (MEG) or PET scanning, may be useful in selected cases to determine the AVM's relationship to eloquent cerebral cortex.
