This technique is performed by sacrifice of the parent artery . To reduce the risk of stroke from the procedure, prior test occlusion of the artery is carried out. The main indications for this form of treatment are symptomatic cavernous carotid aneurysms (treatment is not usually indicated for those picked up coinci-dentally on MRI or at angiography) or giant aneurysms below the bifurcation of the internal carotid artery not amenable to conventional neurosurgical treatment or unsuitable for treatment with a GDC coil.
