Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus has been reported to occur in as many as 15% of patients with intramedullary tumors. The mechanisms for hydrocephalus include an increased concentration of protein in the cerebrospinal fluid, arachnoidal fibrosis and sub-arachnoid dissemination. The incidence of hydrocephalus is substantially higher in patients with malignant tumors (approximately 35%) than in those with low-grade tumors (approximately 15%). Patients with cervical tumors are more likely to develop hydro-cephalus, probably secondary to obstruction of the fourth ventricle outlets.
