Although both estrogen and progesterone receptors have been found in meningiomas, to date attempted hormonal manipulation has met with little success. The observation that hydroxy urea inhibits the growth of meningioma cells in cell culture has led to its use in the treatment of unresectable and recurrent meningiomas of the skull base. In a small study of four patients, three of whom had cavernous sinus menin-giomas, the results are encouraging, showing marked regression in three subjects and failure of recurrence of a malignant meningioma in the fourth . The results of larger studies are awaited.
