The purpose of this chapter is to provide some of the rationale leading up to the development of the H-2KbteA58 transgenic mouse, a prototype of animals that can be used to create conditionally immortal cell lines readily from any tissue of interest. In addition, examples are presented of some of the cell lines thus far derived from the animals and of general principles that can be derived from these successes. The reader is also referred to refs. 1-3, as well as the indicated primary references.
