Outlook for Nanoscale Biosensing

The last several years have featured many developments indicating that biosensing strategies that take advantage of nanomaterials and nanostructures offer great promise. Powerful methods based on optical readout of nanoparticle sensors and field effects detected at single nanowires have been reported that offer advantages over existing techniques, due to their heightened sensitivity and greater potential for miniaturization. Our efforts to develop electrochemical biosensing methods that use nanowire electrodes as a sensing platform also indicate that significantly heightened sensitivity can be obtained through the use of nanoscale architectures. These advances validate the great attention that nanotech-nology has attracted, and demonstrate that there are unique intrinsic properties of nanomaterials that are extremely useful for the development of biosensors.
