Lipid Based Bionanofabrication

Lipids are an interesting class of biomolecules because of the diversity of self-assembled nanoscale supramolecular structures that they can adopt such as micelles, bilayers, and vesicles. Lipid vesicles have been widely used for drug delivery because of their excellent drug loading and release capability, low toxicity, and long-term stability [23,24,148,149]. Lipid vesicles have been shown to be useful as templates and reaction initiation sites in the biomineralization of various metal oxides, metal hydroxides, and semiconductor particles [150-156]. In addition, the entrapment of reactants inside the vesicles enables the development of controlled-release systems by making liposomes responsive to external stimuli [27,142].
