Introduction

Bionanotechnology is a new field based on chemistry, physics, and molecular biology. It is largely concerned with the development of nanoscale bioassemblies that do not occur in nature. The assemblies produced in this field form devices that are under 100 nm in their largest dimension, monodisperse, and soluble in aqueous media. Although chemical conjugation can be used in the assembly of several components into a device, naturally occurring biospecificities are often helpful in that they permit self-assembly. Several of these new technologies afford novel approaches to drug design and delivery. An essential component of this third generation of drugs [1] is their capacity for selective targeting.
