The windup phase puts the pitcher in a good starting position (Fig. 2.1). The windup starts when the pitcher initiates the movement (Fig. 2.1A) and ends when the front knee has reached its maximum height and the pitcher is in a balanced position (Fig. 2.1B). This phase typically lasts from 0.5 to 1.0 second. Minimal elbow kinetics and muscle activity are present.12,24-26 The elbow is flexed throughout the phase, and isometric contractions of the elbow flexors maintain elbow flexion (Table 2.1).26-28
