Some authors have conducted biomechanical analyses of javelin throwing.56,57 Most of these studies concentrated on kinematic parameters related to performance; consequently, the stress or load experienced at the elbow has not been quantified extensively. Mero et al. investigated the contribution of body segments to the javelin throw during Olympic competition.56 During the thrust phase (from final foot contact until javelin release), the elbow extends through a flexion range of approximately 40° (from 100° to 57°). Top throwers (i.e., Olympic medal winners) have a 60° range of motion at the elbow (from 96° to 40°), which is comparable with the flexion range for baseball pitchers. This range of motion occurs although the javelin thrower has less elbow flexion than a baseball pitcher or football quarterback at the time of foot contact. The elbow extension angular velocity achieved during the thrust phase is high, reaching a maximum of 1900°/sec.
