Seroprevalence in pregnant women

The frequency of Toxoplasma infection during pregnancy depends upon the number of seronegative women of child-bearing age and on the prevailing infection risk. It is thus of importance to know the seroprevalence of pregnant women. In some parts of Asia and in northern areas only a small percentage of pregnant women are infected, while in Africa, South America, and southern Europe, more than 50% have antibodies. The prevalence of antibodies in Europe is shown in Figure 14.1. Even within our continent great variations exist. Different surveys of pregnant women in the Nordic countries have been performed in the last decade.
