Epidemiology

The epidemiology of trichinellosis is characterised by two main cycles, a synanthropicdomestic cycle (T. spiralis) and a sylvatic cycle (all species and phenotypes, including T. spiralis). As shown in Table 21.1, T. spiralis, T. britovi, and T. nativa are distributed in the Northern Hemisphere. Table 21.2 summarizes the distribution of the various species in nine countries (Kapel 1996).
