From 1992, serological tests have been carried out for this infection in Lithuania. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test was used from 1992 to 1994 and indirect haemagglutination (IHA) test for 1995 and 1996. For this period, 1350 persons have been tested (1783 single tests carried out, 141 giving positive results). Some cases of echinococcosis with localization in liver were registered in Latvia during the 1960s. The prevalence in domestic animals in Latvia in 1965 according to the veterinary service was as follows: 2.8% in pigs, 0.8% in sheep, and 0.48% in cows. From the mid-1980s, 0.01% of cow carcasses and 0.001-0.002% of pig carcasses have been reported infected. In 1994-1995, 0.001% of sheep carcasses have been reported infected. The data of surgical intervention in humans in Latvia are as follows: 1984, one case (liver); 1994, six cases (liver, five; cerebral, one); 1995, four cases (liver). There are no reliable data available for Estonia.
