For the proper diagnosis of an enterobius infection, eggs from the peri-anal area should be visualized. In the morning, a strip of tape should be applied with the sticky side to the skin. The strip can then be transferred onto a glass slide for direct microscopy. Eggs have a typical appearance. Repeated investigations are of value; three consecutive specimens will detect 90% of the infections. Other tests, for example, a standard stool examination, are less valuable and eosinophilia is generally not present.
