This disorder is not very common, but is very often misunderstood and misinterpreted.
The patient may complain of parasites in the skin - sometimes with itch, but more often without - and often has consulted several other doctors and received repeated treatment procedures. The disorder is not a 'phobia' in strict psychiatric sense: thus 'delusion of parasitosis, is preferred.
For appropriate handling of the patient (often a female above 60 years of age) the doctor should understand that the patient does not believe, but she knows that she has parasites in her skin! Sometimes the husband/spouse also has the same pathological ideas.
