Although the anisakid worm Pseudoterranova decipiens is found in a high percentage of cod caught off the Atlantic coast of Canada and cod is eaten raw in some coastal communities, human anisakiasis has been only rarely reported as a human infection in this region. The most frequent presentation is a vomited or coughed up worm several days after raw fish consumption. The anisakid Anisakis simplex is more frequently found off the west coast of Canada and in Alaska and is a more invasive worm burrowing into the stomach or small intestinal wall with resulting pain.
