■ For an intervention to be effective in maintaining or restoring gait performance, however, improving muscle strength only would not be sufficient. Functional performance is determined by appropriate balance of forces generated by multiple muscles. Therefore, not only is the maximum force generated by a muscle relevant, but also optimal muscle length, muscle fibre composition, relative strength of agonists and antagonists and neuromuscular coordination. However, these have been mentioned in Chap. 9 and will not be repeated here
