Its patency depends on muscular activity and is influenced by various factors such as sleep state, route of breathing, hypercapnia, hypoxia, and lung volume (7). In UARS and OSA, upper airway resistance during sleep can increase significantly so that ventilation becomes compromised triggering adaptive mechanisms. These adaptive mechanisms act to maintain the physiologic metabolic equilibrium as well as the behavioral state of sleep.
