Pathogenesis Of Obstructive Sleep Apneainsights From Upper Airway Imaging

The imaging modalities described in the previous section have examined the pathogenesis of obstructive apneas by assessing airway morphology in different states: awake, asleep, and during respiration. Awake imaging studies examine the static factors (craniofacial and soft tissue structures) that predispose subjects to obstructive apnea. Imaging during sleep provides insight into the state-dependent anatomico-physiological changes in the airway. Dynamic imaging permits examination of the airway during inspiration and expiration and have allowed us to understand the narrowing or occlusion of the airway that can occur during expiration (28).
