arousals. In a similar study of asthmatic patients with nocturnal worsening, Weigand et al. (23) reported that salmeterol was superior to theophylline for improving nocturnal forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1), reducing rescue therapy with albuterol, and improving perception of sleep. Shah et al. (24) reviewed the efficacy of long acting beta-adrenergic agents versus theophylline for maintenance treatment of asthma, and suggested that salmeterol is more effective than theophylline in reducing asthma symptoms (including nocturnal worsening), with fewer adverse side effects. Inhaled long acting beta-adrenergic agents should therefore routinely be considered before the addition of theophylline.
