For certain patients, especially those with symptoms of insomnia, cognitive behavioral treatment as an adjunct to CPAP may be beneficial (53,64). Avoidance of agents known to impair ventilation during sleep in patients with OSA including alcohol (65) and benzodiazepines (66) may have a positive effect.
Insufficient data exist on the potential effect of weight loss in UARS. However, weight loss, which has shown to reduce AHI in OSA (67,68), may also be a treatment option for UARS. Given the fact that the typical BMI in this patient group is well below 40 they are rarely candidates for surgical interventions for weight loss (69).
