Preparing the Patient for Therapy

As with all other therapies, it is critical that the patient be informed and able to consent to the proposed administration of RAI. The prevailing high public level of negativity about nuclear technology, combined with the difficulty that thyrotoxic people may have in focusing their thoughts, can make it difficult to obtain an informed consent. In such cases it may be best to institute a short course of antithyroid medication to provide a hesitant patient some time to consider the treatment options.
