Localization Within the Central Nervous System

ACTH 1-39 and ACTH 11-24 have been demonstrated by immunohistochemis-try in the hypothalamus, the thalamus, the amygdala and in the periaqueductal gray.

ACTH 4-10 has a more restricted distribution and is expressed in the ventral horn of the spinal chord, the eminentia mediana, the septal area and the sub-ventricular zone of the third ventricle.

ACTH 1-39 is cleaved from the precursor proopiomelanocortin and can be further processed into shorter forms which also show neurotropic and behavioral effects. The shorter form ACTH 11-24 exhibits biological activity similar to that of ACTH 1-39. It shows corticotropic and melanotropic properties.
