B NO and Potassium Channels

The voltage-gated potassium channels expressed by central myelinated axons are predominantly of the Kv1.1, Kv1.2, and Kv3.1 subtypes (Devaux et al., 2003; Scherer and Arroyo, 2002); but in contrast to the several reports of effects of NO on sodium and calcium channels, few studies have examined the effects of NO specifically on these subtypes of potassium channels. The NO donor S-nitrosocys-teine had few effects on Kv1.1 currents (Busch et al., 1996), but NO donors were found to suppress Kv3.1 currents by a cGMP-mediated pathway (Moreno et al., 2001).
