Refractory Anemia With Excess of Blasts

Conspicuous morphological changes are present, associated with variable cytopenia affecting two or more of the hematopoietic lines. Occasional blasts may be present in the peripheral blood but are always less than 5 percent. Blasts (type I+II+III) range from greater than 5 percent but less than 20 percent in the bone marrow (Plate 14-27). The presence of ALIP in the bone marrow biopsy has been reported to be an adverse prognostic factor.168

In the new WHO proposal of MDS, RAEB remains unchanged, but separation of RAEB into two groups has been recommended: RAEB I with less than 10 percent blasts in the bone marrow and RAEB II with 10 to 20 percent blasts in the bone marrow.
