Several theories have been advanced including 1. higher levels of specific growth factors associated with high birth weight may act as promoters; 2. a larger organ mass could contribute to a larger number of susceptible cells; and 3. other exposures (e.g., x-rays, medications) might increase during pregnancy, due to the large size of the unborn child. Given that this is one of the more consistent risk factors for childhood ALL, further investigation is warranted.
