Hypocalcaemia Causes

• Associated with hyperphosphataemia :

• Renal failure

• Rhabdomyolysis

• Hypoparathyroidism (including surgery), pseudohypoparathyroidism

• Associated with low/normal phosphate:

• Critical illness including sepsis, burns

• Hypomagnesaemia

• Pancreatitis

• Osteomalacia

• Over-hydration

• Massive blood transfusion (citrate-binding)

• Hyperventilation and the resulting respiratory alkalosis may reducethe ionised plasma calcium fraction and induce clinical features of hypocalcaemia
