Time limitation

Psychiatric consultants in the general hospital usually see patients only once or twice. Follow-up visits are desirable for monitoring mental status and the effects of medication, and for psychotherapy, but often are not feasible. Whether the psychiatrist can continue treatment on an outpatient basis depends on local arrangements. The psychiatrist has to make sure that the patient receives the required treatment, even if it is provided by someone else. Thus the psychiatrist should be involved early and place a high priority on motivating the patient to accept mental health treatment.
