A majority of BDD patients seek often costly non-psychiatric treatment.(4) Dermatologists and surgeons are most often consulted, but any type of physician may be seen. Most BDD patients appear dissatisfied with such treatment; many dislike their appearance even more or develop new appearance preoccupations. (!8> Multiple procedures may be received in the search for a cosmetic solution to this psychiatric problem. Occasionally, dissatisfied patients sue, or even become violent towards, the physician. Some patients perform their own surgery, as did one man who cut his nose open and tried to replace his own cartilage with chicken cartilage.
