Stroke

Stroke is defined as the sudden loss of blood supply to an area of the brain resulting in permanent tissue damage. It is the most common neurological disorder and accounts for half of all acute neurological admissions. The incidence for those aged between 35 and 65 is between 90 and 330 per 100 000. It is more common in men and the incidence increases steeply with advancing age. Better control of hypertension has resulted in a fall in its incidence in some countries in recent years. Ischaemic stroke accounts for 80 to 85 per cent of cases, and haemorrhagic stroke for 15 to 20 per cent.
