Scientific background

Therapeutic communities emerged largely as a pragmatic response to the needs of psychological casualties unable to manage in ordinary society. In developing their techniques practitioners have drawn on the concepts of psychoanalysis, especially as applied to organizations, group analysis (see Chapt§L6.3.6), and on sociological studies of mental hospitals.(7) They have also incorporated a range of other therapeutic techniques including psychodrama, art therapy, and, more recently, cognitive-behavioural techniques. Part of the scientific argument for the therapeutic community approach in mental hospitals were studies of the behavioural correlates of unconscious processes in organizations. ^„M2, and 13>
